L'Athens

(Cincinnati, 1896)

Contemporary Description

This is a late-nineteenth century waltz sequence by Ross Granger, described in Kopp's American Prompter in 1896.

The Position

Part I: Waltz position.
Part II: Holding inside hands.
Part III: Right-in-right, then left-in-left.

The Dance

Part I - Polka Redowa (4 Bars)

Four bars of Polka Redowa in waltz position.

Part II - Grapevine and Point (4 Bars)

Holding inside hands, slide left to side (1), cross right behind left (2), slide left to side (3), and point right across in front (4), holding (5, 6). Change to other inside hands and repeat opposite, traveling to the right, against LOD (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).

Part III - Mazurka, Walk-Around, and Honor (8 Bars)

Taking right-in-right hands, do two Mazurka steps (slide, cut, lift) to the left (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), then walk forward around each other to trade places (1, 2, 3), and honor partner (4, 5, 6).

Taking left-in-left hands, repeat the last four bars opposite, still traveling along LOD.

Repeat from the beginning.
